Summer Wedding Dos and Don’ts
By Christina Howard
So you’re planning a summer wedding – congrats! Before the big day arrives, check out this list of summer wedding dos and don’ts to make sure everyone (including you!) has an amazing and flawless day!
Do plan early and give notice – Everyone is busier in the summer and most event calendars begin filling up a year ahead of time. Give your guests (and venues, florists, entertainment!) time to plan. Planning your wedding far in advance will make your event run smoothly, giving you more peace of mind and a chance to have fun!
Don’t plan your wedding for midday – When the sun is hottest, your guests won’t want to sit under the hot sun for hours. Instead, plan a morning or evening reception. If you’ve hired a photographer to capture the big day, consider the type of lighting you want in pictures. Most photographers can work with the lighting to create gorgeous sunset or nighttime shots.
Do serve light, summer inspired food – Choose a menu that fits your theme and highlights the delicious flavors of summer. BBQ, grilled chicken and veggies, and fruit skewers are easy to eat in the hot summer sun and will also set the mood for fun. (pic of skewers or fruit or summery tgk food)
Don’t leave the cake in the sun – You’ve spent a chunk of your budget on that gorgeous cake – don’t let it melt in the sun before anyone gets to enjoy it! A cake, especially fondant, cannot stay out in direct sunlight, so be sure to bring it inside to the dessert table at least an hour before dessert is being served.
Do give your guests relief from the elements – Outdoor wedding can be beautiful and fun, but don’t let the excitement of the day overshadow your guests’ comfort. Look for a venue with indoor and outdoor space, so your guests can grab some air conditioned relief if needed. Also, make sure you have plenty of water available, like this mint or cucumber infused water.
Don’t forget the critters and bugs – Make bug repellant work with your décor. For a rustic theme, turn glass jars into citronella candles that double as centerpieces. You can also include small packets of bug repellant in your guests’ favor bags for an added layer of protection.
Do plan fun outdoor activities – Summer weddings beg for outdoor games and fun, inspired food! Try games like corn hole, life-size jenga, and even mini golf! Elements like a hot dog bar or make your own mimosa bar! For an evening wedding, nothing beats a make your own s’mores stations with portable campfire to give your wedding that extra pizazz your guests are looking for.
Don’t forget the details – The great part about a summer wedding is that you can use in season flowers and food that may help cut costs. Putting together a fun gift bag for guests is a great idea to make them feel more comfortable. Include fans, sunscreen, deodorant, hair spray, flip flops or mirrors to make them feel comfortable and cared for!
